CHAPTER THIRTEEN

"Help!"

"Can anyone hear me?"

We yelled at the top of our lungs, the echoes rebounding in a chorus. It took five minutes for us to realize it was futile. We were trapped, in a cave tunnel. For no apparent reason. Separated from Gavin and Jim.

"How many days' worth of oxygen do you think is down here? Five? Ten?" I glanced around the tunnel, my mind going a mile a minute. "The tunnel is about seven feet tall, ten feet wide, and how long? Five hundred feet, maybe? That means, assuming it's a cylinder, about—"

"Kira!"

"What?"

"Not helpful!"

"Okay. You're right. We need to find a way out. We probably just missed it while we were talking." I leaned against the wall, panting. "We need to—"

Brzt. The radio buzzed—then an explosion of voices. "Kira? Abby? Where are you?"

"We're trapped!" Abby said, her voice echoing across the cold stone.

"Yeah. We took the wrong tunnel, and now we're walled off. Completely. I don't even know—"

"Is that Kira? Are they okay?" Gavin's voice came through in the background. Jim muttered something incoherent back.

"Listen to me." Jim's voice cut through the silence. Judging by its grim urgency, he was going to say something really, really bad. I gulped.

"You took the left tunnel instead of the right," he continued. "It's a... a trap, of sorts. You can get through it, but you need to do exactly as I say, okay?"

"Okay," Abby and I said in unison, glancing at each other warily.

"You need to close your eyes."

Oh boy.

"But first, do you have the compasses I gave you?"

"Yeah," I said, pulling out the small, circular compass. The needle was twitching strangely, and my heart plummeted.

"You want to place your hand on the south wall. Both of you."

We walked over to the other side of the cave, flickering and dancing in the fire's glow. I reached out a hand, and touched the cold, slick wall.

"Close your eyes. Now."

Abby and I exchanged another nervous glance. Then I closed my eyes tight.

"You may hear sounds, voices, all kinds of things. Do not respond to them. Just follow the wall. Do not lose contact with it." A pause. Then, he said softly: "And most of all... do not open your eyes."

"Okay. I... I think we can do that." But already I felt the darkness swallowing us up. Already felt the uneven ground on my feet, and felt the impulse to open my eyes.

"In a few minutes you should get out. We'll see you when we do. Make sure you never lose contact with the wall and do not open your eyes."

"Okay," Abby stuttered.

"See you in a few minutes."

Then there was only silence.

"I guess we should start," I said. With my eyes shut tight, I lifted my right foot. My hand slid across the wall. Then I brought my foot onto the slick, uneven ground, and fear pounded through me.

There's no way we can do this.

"What do you think Jim meant?" Abby asked behind me.

My heart pounded. There was something... different about her voice. It took me a full ten seconds to realize what was wrong.
